What Is BPM?
BPM (Beats Per Minute) is the standard unit for measuring musical tempo — the speed at which a piece of music is played. One “beat” typically corresponds to one quarter note, and the BPM value tells you how many of those beats occur in 60 seconds.
Tempo is fundamental to how music feels. A track at 70 BPM feels slow and relaxed, while a track at 150 BPM feels fast and energetic. In electronic music, BPM is especially important because DJs need to match tempos when mixing tracks together, and producers choose a BPM range based on the genre they are writing in.
Most DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) display BPM in the transport bar, but when you are listening to a track without access to its project file — say, at a club, on a stream, or from a vinyl record — a tap tempo tool lets you determine the BPM by tapping along to the rhythm.
How to Use This BPM Tap Tool
- Play the track whose tempo you want to measure.
- Click the TAP button or press Spacebar in time with the beat.
- After 3-4 taps, the BPM reading appears. Keep tapping for a more accurate average (up to 16 taps are used).
- Check the stability indicator — “Very stable” means your taps are consistent.
- See which electronic music genres match your detected BPM.
- Click Copy BPM to save the value to your clipboard.
- Click Reset to start a new measurement.
If you stop tapping for more than 3 seconds, the next tap starts a fresh measurement automatically.
