Gain Staging — What It Means in Music Production

Gain staging is the practice of setting appropriate signal levels at every point in the audio chain — from the source through each plugin, channel, bus, and the master output — so that no stage is driven into unwanted distortion and every processor receives a level in its intended operating range.

Gain staging comes from the analog era, where every device had a fixed noise floor below and a distortion ceiling above, and the engineer's job was to keep the signal comfortably between the two at every stage. Modern DAWs process audio in 32-bit floating point, which cannot clip internally, so the rules have relaxed — but they have not disappeared. The converter feeding your monitors still clips above 0 dBFS, and many plugins (especially analog-modeled compressors, saturators, and channel strips) are calibrated to sound right around a nominal level, commonly -18 dBFS RMS.

A practical workflow: set each channel so it peaks roughly between -12 and -6 dBFS before any processing, using a gain utility at the top of the chain rather than the channel fader (the fader sits after your inserts, so it cannot fix a level that is already overdriving a plugin). Aim for unity through each plugin — output level matching input level — so that bypassing a processor compares its effect, not its volume. Louder reliably sounds better, and uncontrolled level jumps between plugins will mislead every decision you make.

On the mix bus, the conventional target is peaks around -6 dBFS before mastering. The number itself is not magic; what matters is that the mix reaches the mastering stage clean and with headroom, so EQ, compression, and limiting can be applied deliberately rather than fighting a signal already slammed against the ceiling. If your mix bus meter is permanently red, the fix is to pull down every channel (or a trim on the bus input), not to drop the master fader after the fact.

In Electronic Music

Electronic productions are especially prone to gain-staging problems because synth presets are often normalized close to full scale and tracks routinely stack dozens of layers. A reliable approach: bring your kick in at around -8 dBFS peak, balance every other element against it, and let the mix bus land near -6 dBFS peaks naturally. Pay attention to input level on saturation and analog-style plugins — driving them 6 dB hotter changes their character, not just their volume — and leave your limiter as the only stage that deliberately pushes toward 0 dBFS.
