Stem — What It Means in Music Production
A stem is a grouped submix of related tracks — all drums, all bass, all synths, or all vocals — exported as a single audio file. Stems sit between the full multitrack session and the final stereo mixdown, and are the standard delivery format for stem mastering, official remixes, collaborations, and live performance.

Stems are often confused with multitracks, but they are different: multitracks are every individual channel in a session (which can be dozens of files), while stems consolidate those channels into a handful of musically meaningful groups. A typical electronic stem set is four to six files — drums, bass, synths/music, vocals, and FX — each printed with its processing, so that playing all stems together reproduces the full mix exactly.
Stems exist because a stereo mixdown is a one-way street: once summed, the kick can no longer be turned down independently of the bass. Stem mastering uses this middle ground — the engineer receives stems instead of a single stereo file, allowing targeted fixes (taming a harsh lead, lifting a buried vocal) that would be impossible or destructive on the full mix. Remixers rely on stems for the same reason: they need the vocal without the drums, or the bassline in isolation, as raw material.
Exporting clean stems follows a few rules: every stem starts at bar 1 of the project (so they align when re-imported), each is printed through its group processing with effects included, levels are untouched from the mix (so the stems sum back to the mix), and files are delivered as 24-bit WAV at the project sample rate with a few dB of headroom. Decide deliberately whether master bus processing is printed on the stems — for stem mastering it should be off; for a performance backup it may be on.
In Electronic Music
Stems are working currency in electronic music. Labels request them for official remixes, mastering engineers offer stem mastering as a middle tier between mixing and stereo mastering, and live acts perform entire sets from stems in Ableton Live, muting and re-combining groups on the fly. AI stem separation tools (Demucs and similar) can approximate stems from a finished stereo file and have made bootleg remixing accessible, but the artifacts are audible — for anything official, always export real stems from the session.
